Lucent Launches Stinger for DSL Systems
By Mark Long, E-inSITE

May 30, 2001 --- Lucent Technologies has developed a new digital subscriber line (DSL) remote access concentrator (RAM) for extending the reach of DSL services.

About the size of a pizza pan, the Stinger MRT combines 36 asymmetric DSL (ADSL) ports and splitters in a 1U high chassis that offers flexible mounting options. Designed for low to medium density applications, the product is targeted at the multiple tenant unit (MTU), multiple dwelling unit (MDU) and hospitality market segments.

Designed to function in tandem with existing digital loop carrier (DLC) systems, the Stinger Micro-Remote Terminal (MRT) is a mini-DSL access multiplexer (DSLAM) that has been designed to circumvent the roadblocks that might otherwise prevent DLC systems in new housing developments and suburban and rural areas from receiving high-speed DSL service. Available beginning in 3Q01, the ATM-switch-based platform can be cascaded locally, or can be subtended from distant remote sites to allow for future expansion.

"Presently, DLCs serve approximately 78 million telephone lines, or about one-third of telephone customers in the United States," said RHK analyst Ken Twist in a prepared statement. "Mini-RAMs like the Stinger MRT will enable service providers to deploy broadband services in areas that are otherwise inaccessible today."
