Severed ties
Until Universal plug-and-play or Jini arrives, Hewlett-Packard's
JetSend may offer the best alternative to linking PDAs, palmtops, and digital
cameras directly to printers.
To print today, you usually have to upload the
data to a host PC for printing, or at the very least make sure your device has
a printer-specific driver. With JetSend, your device and printer communicate
via infrared to negotiate their abilities and process a job. System designers
can download the free 540-kbit OS module for Windows CE systems at
www.jetsend.hp.com. And now Hewlett-Packard plans to offer JetSend for the Palm
OS. The company claims that JetSend can also seamlessly link two host
systems.
