Growing home
Support expands for the HAVi standard
Sharing high-speed Internet access (from DSL or cable) to more than one PC has so far been the primary driver for purchases of home-networking kits. However, home entertainment is emerging as a strong market opportunity.
Underscoring this growing momentum, the Home Audio Video interoperability (HAVi) organization has announced eight new member companies that encompass interactive television leaders, specialists in IEEE 1394, semiconductor makers, and software developers.
The recent companies or institutions to join HAVi are GMD Fokus, Hewlett Packard, the Institut of Computer Technology, MIPS Technologies, Sensory Science, Teralogic, 3A International, and Zayante.
Founded by a group of major consumer-electronics manufacturers, including Matsushita, Philips, Sharp, Sony, Thomson, and Toshiba, HAVi is developing a specification for interoperability among networked digital home-entertainment products.
