Upgrade path

TV maker makes its boxes forward-compatible with HDTV

Since 1998, Mitsubishi has been alone in promising that its TVs will be upgradeable to HDTV. Now, the company has announced the details. Mitsubishi will offer a digital receiver module that will have an IEEE 1394 interface and will support HAVi (home audio video interoperability) control of IEEE 1394 devices. The company hasn’t announced availability, but pledges to provide the module for less than $1000 and offer HAVi throughout its TV, VCR, and DVD product line.

The company also just announced a $10,000, 65-in, rear-projection HDTV based on Texas Instrument’s Digital Light Processor (DLP). We haven’t seen this particular set, but previous DLP displays have been breathtaking.
