Microsoft's not shy about DTV
One would think Microsoft might take a meek approach to new markets, given its ongoing government troubles. But the company continues to try and hammer out a presence in the DTV market beyond PCs. After years of mostly failure, Microsoft seems on the verge of some success in set-top boxes. The giant has a new, segmented family of offerings called Microsoft TV,
all built around Windows CE. At the recent Cable 2000 show, NDS, Pace Micro Technology, and Microsoft demonstrated set-top boxes with enhanced services such as Web browsing, streaming audio and video, home-network support, and multiplayer gaming. Motorola and Matsushita will also use Microsoft TV in new set-top boxes.
