DVD adoption frenzy
RESEARCH: "The most successful consumer electronics launch ever"
Separate reports from the DVD Entertainment Group and InfoTech, an independent market researcher, confirm the obvious: consumers are snapping up DVD players at an astounding rate. Both groups agree DVD players will reach the milestone figure of 10% penetration among US households this year.
The DVD Entertainment Group reports that 5.4 million players have found homes in the US since the format's launch, and predicts consumers will carry home 8 million more this year. That means DVD players put more than $1 billion into retailers cash registers in 1999.
InfoTech tallies worldwide sales so far at 8.5 million players, noting that the installed base increased 247 percent in the last year. The forecasting firm also says sales and rentals of DVDs accounted for $2 billion in revenue worldwide in 1999, a figure that will jump to $6.1 billion this year.
