DSLeration

Looking toward the next next generation

Even before ADSL is widely available, broadband pioneers are striking out in search of ways to move bits even faster. We cover one such technique, HDSL (high-bit-rate DSL) in this issue ("In & out"). Another scheme, dubbed VDSL (very-high-bit-rate DSL) promises to boost ADSL rates by a factor of five or 10—topping out at 52 Mbits/sec.

The technology will ship in both symmetric and asymmetric flavors, based on application. Broadcom and Infineon are leading the VDSL standardization effort within the auspices of the VDSL Coalition. Their efforts should ultimately yield video-over-data services for consumers.

Meanwhile, Broadcom is already finding ways to apply its VDSL technology. The company has announced the V-thernet family of chips, which distribute broadband services throughout multi-dwelling units, hotels, and offices. Using standard phone lines, the V-thernet technology can deliver 10-Mbit/sec rates over a 1 km span—10 times the reach of conventional Ethernet. Broadcom expects popular applications to include video-on-demand in hotels, as well as data services.
