Did somebody say “terabits”?
Chipset pumps up the bit volume
Just when we begin to understand gigabits, here come terabits (1000 Gigabits), at least for the backbone networks. After all, we need terabit backbone capabilities to support the proliferation of megabit broadband services everywhere. PMC-Sierra’s new Tiny Tera One chip set lets equipment vendors build switches and routers with aggregate bandwidth of 320 Gbits/sec. Moreover,
the chips support the Line Card to Switch (LCS) industry-standard protocol, and can provide aggregate bandwidths in the tens of Tbits/sec range when a design concatenates multiple chip sets.
