Under my skin
Convergence enters the body
Never mind getting lost on Route 80 somewhere in Middle America without your own personal GPS unit feeding directions to your PDA. Imagine that you’re an EMT on your way to save a seriously ill patient. While a tracking system might help you find the person quickly, will you know what to expect when you get there?
In October, Applied Digital Solutions will demonstrate Digital Angel, a prototype that combines bio-sensor technology with wireless IP and GPS. No bigger than a grain of rice and equipped with a miniature antenna, the sensor can capture and wirelessly transmit biometrics, such as body temperature and pulse, along with location.
Applications? Retrieving lost objects or pets, locating stolen property or misplaced airline baggage, and reducing crime, not to mention the obvious medical advantages for at-risk individuals. The sensor can even be attached to the body or placed just under the skin.
