Clocking auto-electronics processors
The EDN Embedded Microprocessor Benchmark Consortium
(EEMBC, pronounced "embassy") began a Herculean task two years ago
to develop real-world benchmarks for processors in automotive and five other
embedded-application areas. EEMBC has rolled out the fruits of its labors in
Version 1.0 of the EEMBC benchmarks. In addition to the automotive benchmarks,
the metrics for the industrial and telecommunications segments have been
released.
For the automotive segment, EEMBC selected a CAN-bus benchmark (along
with 16 others), because the majority of automotive electronic modules are
networked in some manner. Upon the completion of this first group of
benchmarks, members began preparing their processors and compilers for official
certification at the EEMBC Certification Labs. This step will allow them to
publicly release benchmark scores. "The general consensus is that these
benchmarks are long overdue and the
manufacturers welcome them with open
arms," says EEMBC President Markus Levy. EEMBC is planning a staged
rollout of benchmark scores in April. Until then, if you would like benchmark
scores for a processor or compiler combination, you may contact EEMBC and
arrange for a confidential viewing.
